GSC Chairman Bruce Douglas (left) and Secretary-General John Smirnow present at PVCEC 2016
PVCEC 2016 closed successfully on October 21st at the China New International Exhibition Center in Beijing. More than 27,000 solar professionals attended, nearly doubling attendance from the previous year. Both GSC Chairman Bruce Douglas and Secretary-General John Smirnow presented at the conference.

COP22: TIME FOR ACTION
On November 4th, the Paris Agreement entered into force as 55% of total global GHG emissions have been accounted for by more than 55 of the Parties that have ratified the Agreement. This paves the way for constructive discussions, cooperation and forward-looking policy-making at COP22 in Marrakesh, Morocco. After the historic Agreement made in Paris last year, it is now time for action!
There is no doubt that the solar PV industry will play a central role in the future low-carbon economy. Solar PV is a low-cost, reliable and clean source of energy, which provides energy security and must be seen as an important tool in alleviating poverty in a sustainable and responsible manner. GSC Co-Chairman Pranav Mehta of the National Solar Energy Federation of India and Dr. Rodrigo Lopes Sauaia of the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association ABSOLAR will be representing the Council at COP22 this week. We will have updates throughout the conference so be sure to follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn.
GSC PARTNERS WITH IRENA ON NOVEMBER 23 COSTING ALLIANCE WEBINAR
The Coalition for Action is launching a new series of webinars focusing on highly topical renewable energy trends in order to share IRENA and Coalition of Action members’ perspectives and analysis. The first webinar in this series will focus on the increasing competitiveness of renewable power generation. GSC Board Member Marcelo Alvarez and Secretary-General John Smirnow will present on behalf of the GSC.
The Costing Alliance has successfully developed a world-class database of more than 15,000 utility-scale renewable power generation projects. But much work remains to be done, as the coverage of the database by technology and country is not even. The proposed webinar will: (I) provide an overview of the IRENA Costing Alliance, including its goals and objectives, and (ii) encourage national, regional and international renewable energy associations to educate their individual company members on the Alliance. The associations will also be encouraged to work directly with IRENA to help grow Costing Alliance membership.
The webinar will be held in English. A Spanish webinar on the same topic will follow. To access and register for the Spanish webinar, please click here:
Please join us on November 23rd to learn more about IRENA's Costing Alliance and how you can both contribute to and benefit from an essential tool for growing the solar industry worldwide. Learn more about the Alliance here.
TURKEY- BIDS FOR 1GW PV CAPACITY TO BE ACCEPTED IN DECEMBER
Turkey currently has a nationwide PV capacity of 600MW, but will nearly triple this number thanks to the new RERA (Renewable Energy Resources Area) Regulation. A 1000MW PPA will be awarded as a single license to the winner of the Karapinar RERA contest.
Some local content requirements may apply, and 25% Turkish shareholding is required. With a price ceiling of 8 USD-cent/kWh, the five lowest offers from qualified applicants will merit their company's inclusion in a reverse auction, with the contract being awarded to the lowest bidder. The deadline for applications is December 12, 2016. A second contest for 500MW capacity is also planned as Turkey ramps up its support for renewable energy. More details can be found in this document. Special thanks to Dr. Kemal Gani Bayraktar and Founding Member GÜNDER for providing this summary.
